Things to remember...

Below are some things that you may want to think about before going away! A lot of the information seems obvious – but you never know; it is easy to forget things sometimes! Its always a good idea to have a checklist.

Checked
Your Passport

Make sure your passport is valid!

All passengers require a passport for international travel, regardless of the destination and it must be valid for the duration of your trip. (Most countries need at least a six month validity period beyond the time of your visit and travel can be refused).

Your Visa

Do you have your valid visa for travel in your passport?

Have you checked if you need a visa for your destination? Make sure you have the correct type of visa. Do as much research as possible.
These procedures take time, sometimes many weeks - even months. Begin as soon as possible.

Insurance

It is often overlooked but it is incredibly important to get insurance cover for the duration of your trip.
If you are going to work, the company you are working for may cover this, but you must find out.
Having an accident in a foreign country can be incredibly expensive – or for reasons beyond your control you may need to cancel your trip.

Vaccinations

Do you need any vaccinations?

Vaccinations are an important part of ensuring your health and safety overseas. Requirements and recommendations vary greatly from region to region but you should contact your local Medical Practitioner to verify.
This should be done as early as possible as some injections or medications are required several weeks in advance of travel.

Driving License
Establish a international driving licenses. Depending on the country of destination, you might have to obtain a local driving license by going to a local driving school and eventually passing a practical /theoretical driving test. In all cases, keep your actual driving license with you. It may be requested by the local authorities in order for you to avoid having to pass a test.

Finances

Do you have enough money?

Take a small amount of cash in the local currency so that you have some upon arrival.
Travellers Cheques are a safe way to carry money, however always make a list of the numbers and leave this with someone you trust at home.
Make sure you have access to funds in case of an emergency…be it an emergency credit card or someone at home who can get funds for you.

Other Tips
Always leave a photocopy of important documents – take one copy with you and leave it with someone in your home country. Important documents may include your passport, airline tickets, Drivers License

Make a list of important telephone numbers that you may need.

If you are a student, it may be worth getting an international student ID card – also some airlines allow an extra luggage allowance if you are an international student .
